ON Making of Hawan at Mansarovar Shore: 
 
Dear Mr.Vikram Pandey,

I first of all thank you for sending us your brochure on ‘Mt.Kailash-Mansarovar - A Thirtha Yatra of a Life Time’. As a prospective visitor to the place, I read it with great interest.

While the information as well as pictures printed in your brochure are quite appealing, I was dismayed to find one particular picture printed in it very prominently: A group of pilgrims performing a “havan” on the banks of the beautiful and serene Mansarovar. As much as I know that these things are happening, I would be grateful if you would refrain from publicizing the possibility to do it.

Mr.Pandya, my sincere appeal to you is to take action on two accounts: first of all, to replace the photograph in your brochure and secondly to create awareness among your visitors to these holy places on the importance of preserving them for the generations to come.

I am sure any ‘educated’ person today knows that to create a fire – even it is for religious purposes –at a place as pristine and pure as Mansarovar would spell disaster for the surroundings. These are the only few places probably left in India, which have so far been away from human interference. But it seems like it is also not to remain that way. We, the educated, still carry on activities that destroy nature and behave as though we have nothing to do with it. In a few years’ time there will be no pristine Mansarovar for our children to see. The plight of this wonderful place will be the same as that of any other place in the Himalaya today, where people go to experience the purity of the mountains and return leaving a pile of waste behind. Has religion taught us to disregard nature to such an extent? Today there is enough awareness created on global warming, receding of glaciers, about scarcity of water on earth, yet the educated (and mostly the educated because only they have the means) visit such places and play havoc with nature. Is God kinder and more benevolent to those to perform rituals that destroy nature?  Let us not forget that Mt.Kailash as well as Lake Mansarovar are also gifted to us by nature. And nature is God’s gift to mankind. I am sure He does not want to see it all being destroyed. So lets try the nature-friendly way of pleasing and appeasing Him - let us just join our hands and pray..

Mr.Pandya, I would like to quote from your brochure: ”In the ancient period, it took years for sages and saints to reach Mt.Kailash for salvation(Moksha) and above that it was inaccessible for common people because of its geological location. Thanks to modern transport system, the path to salvation is no longer an isolated dream. Now it doesn’t take more than three weeks to materialize your much-awaited dream..”  Indeed it is a boon that today the common man can travel to such holy places so easily and you as the facilitator are blessed that you help people realize their dreams. However, it is also a huge responsibility on our part (as the common man) as well as yours (as the facilitator) to make sure that these places are preserved for generations to come and ensure that the ‘dream’ does not turn into a ‘nightmare’ in the future.

After our conversation on the phone, I am very hopeful that you will do something about the matter, as you came across as a very understanding and aware person as well as a nature lover.

I thank you in advance for your efforts. I am well aware that this contribution to mankind is just a drop in the ocean. However, every drop does count.
